Check limited warranties for complete coverage and restrictions. Also note (as previously mentioned):
The word "Lifetime" means as long as the original individual owner of a single family detached residence (or the second owner in certain circumstances) owns the property where the roof was installed. For owners/structures (e.g., a church) not meeting above criteria, lifetime coverage is not applicable. See limited warranty for complete coverage and restrictions.
Installer certification is only for installations covered by GAF system warranties.
Maximum wind coverage requires special installation. See limited warranty for complete coverage and restrictions.
Roof Warranty FAQ
Why should I get a warranty on my roof?
A new roof is a big investment. A quality roof replacement typically costs thousands of dollars, and should last you 25, 30, even 40 years or more. Protecting your investment with a warranty could save you thousands of dollars down the line, if unexpected problems should arise.
What are the chances that I might have a problem with my new GAF roof?
GAF roofs are installed using state-of-the-art materials and techniques, so the odds of having a problem with a brand new GAF roof are minimal. However, you should always be prepared for the unexpected to happen. If you do have a problem with your roof, it can cost as much to fix the problem as it did to have the roof installed in the first place. That's why protecting your investment with a warranty is a wise decision.
What should I look for in a roofing warranty?
There are two main types of coverage that you should ask us about when we install your roof:
Coverage against manufacturing defects in the materials
Coverage against workmanship errors
How much does coverage against manufacturing defects protect me?
All manufacturers whose products we trust provide a warranty against manufacturing defects for their roofing products.
Your exact coverage depends on the brand. Most architectural shingles have a lifetime* limited warranty against manufacturing defects, while most 3 tab shingles will have a limited warranty against manufacturing defects that lasts for 20, 25, or 30 years. Every manufacturer's warranty has its own specific terms and conditions. It is imperative that you read each warranty carefully so you know what is covered and what is not.
If you are not the original owner of the roof, you may not be covered under the manufacturer's warranty. Most manufacturers, including GAF, limit warranty coverage to the original owner and the first subsequent owner, so long as the subsequent owner notifies the manufacturer of the change in ownership. Again, this varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, so it's important to familiarize yourself with the exact terms of the warranty.
The other components that make up your roof also have their own warranties. Coverage of these other components can be as long as lifetime* coverage or as little as a few months of protection. That is why we offer three different warranties - compared in the chart above - that cover your entire roofing system.
What is GAF's Smart Choice® Protection Period?
All GAF warranties come with a special period of protection called the Smart Choice® Protection Period. This provides you with extra coverage against manufacturing defects during the first few years after your new roof is installed. If you experience a manufacturing defect on covered components during this period, GAF will cover 100% of the cost of replacement materials, as well as the reasonable cost of labor to install them.
Other roofing warranties only cover replacement materials, but not labor. Not ours. We want to make sure you're protected.
What is the GAF Weather Stopper® System Plus Limited Warranty?
The GAF Weather Stopper® System Plus Limited Warranty covers manufacturing defects for all major GAF roofing components. This coverage is not limited to shingles. If any covered roofing component fails, this warranty will cover it (see warranty documentation for complete coverage and restrictions). This is a low cost way to get up to 50 years of non-prorated coverage against manufacturing defects in your new roofing system.
We highly recommend this warranty. It's a small additional cost, but it could save you a large amount of money in the long run.
Can I get additional coverage against workmanship errors?
We offer GAF's Golden Pledge® Limited Warranty, which covers both manufacturing deficits and our workmanship for 25 years. (See warranty documentation for complete coverage and restrictions.)
This coverage is only available from factory-certified GAF Master Elite® contractors. We are proud to be able to offer you this exclusive protection plan. We will provide you with a price for this warranty when we give you a quote on your new roof.
How do I file a claim if I find a manufacturing defect or workmanship error on my roof?
First, locate a copy of your GAF warranty, as well as a copy of our invoice, contract, or original estimate. You will also need to provide the date applied, proof that you were the owner when the shingles were installed or that the previous owner's warranty was properly transferred to you, and the number of squares applied (1 square = 100 square feet).
Then, call our Warranty Service Department toll-free at 1-800-458-1860 to file your claim.
